Middle Year students from Katherine School of the Air recently went adventure bound on a weeklong leadership course at Wallaroo, 70 km south-east of Darwin.
Students from all over the Territory as well as remote South Australia attended the camp.
All agreed that the travelling was well worthwhile when the week had concluded and some very weary but high spirited students reflected on their achievements.
Team games and individual tests of endurance and nerve challenged each of the students to produce their best, and in many cases overcome personal phobias or fears.
“The emphasis during the week on enhancing leadership and interpersonal skills was an extension of the KSA Middle Years philosophy,”teacher Michael Keefe said.
“It is felt that exposing the students to wide and varied experiences and challenges can better prepare them for future learning and work.”
Leisurely pursuits such as bush walking and bicycling were accompanied by group activities where teamwork and cooperation were necessary to overcome the obstacles.
Probably the most memorable activities for the students were those involving rock climbing, abseiling and the flying fox.
Many students surprised even themselves with the challenges that they faced and conquered in these tasks.
