Every day more than 30 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer or leukaemia.
In an aim to help find a cure and to support families affected by the illness, people in the Katherine
region donate their locks and go bald.
In the biggest fundraising event the Leukaemia Foundation has seen in Katherine, the community is getting together for Katherine’s Biggest Shave, on Saturday, March 17.
David Laugher, CEO of Katherine Town Council, was one of the first to put his hand up for the cause.
“I have had cancer myself,” he said. “I know what it’s like.
“I’ve lost my mum and my grandma and all her siblings to cancer, one of my cousins was diagnosed with leukaemia, another cousin with pancreatic cancer.”
Mr Laugher said raising funds to find a cure for leukaemia by shaving his head together with other members of the community, was a small contribution to a big cause.
Katherine Regional Arts Chief Executive Toni Tapp Coutts is also going bald for the cause.
“I don’t think there is a person in the western world, who hasn’t been touched by cancer in one way or another,” she said.
“My younger brother is suffering from cancer and I lost one of my best friends to it last year.
“And to shave or colour your hair is such a simple way to raise much needed funds to help those who are suffering.
Katherine Community Radio manager Jon Raynor is also among those who will go bald in March in Katherine’s Biggest Shave.
The event will be held at the Katherine Community Markets on March 17 from 9.30am, and everyone is welcome to join the shave - or even just colour their hair - to raise funds for the cause.
