Katherine identity Fay Miller still vividly remembers the day in 1989 when she fell in love with the town she has now been calling home for
almost 20 years.
“I came to Katherine for a short time - and I fell in love with the lifestyle, the climate and the happy people,” the 64-year-old said.
And after moving to Katherine in 1994 humble Fay is now “ready to make a big commitment to this town and its people” by standing for Mayor in the upcoming elections in March.
Ms Miller - who broke her neck in car accident in 2006 and lost her husband in 2010 - said she took her time to get her “breath back” before considering to take on a new responsibility.
“It took me a while, but I am now emotionally and physically ready and willing to get out there and put all my passion for our region into this role,” she said.
Ms Miller, who owned the Redgum caravan park for 11 years, was chairman and vice chairman of the Katherine Region Tourist Association, Alderman in the 2001 Katherine Town Council and won the seat for Katherine in the 2003 by-election and the 2004 general elections.
She is also heavily involved in volunteer activities with the Katherine Country Music Muster and the Pink Breakfast.
In 2011 she won a Brolga for her outstanding contribution to the tourism industry.
The passionate woman said as Mayor of Katherine she would target antisocial behaviour by enforcing by-laws and she would work on the towns “presentation on arrival”.
“Signage needs to be up-
dated and the currently disgusting surrounds of the Katherine Visitor Centre have to be kept clean and under control.”
Ms Miller said she would also look at an upgrade of shade and seating options at the cemetery, and upgrade of bike paths and to “take back possession of our river” by making the “beautiful highlight of the region, which is dear to everybody’s heart” better accessible.
Ms Miller said some of her long-term goals were the relocation of the Katherine Hospital and the Emergency Services above flood level and the introduction of a freight hub for Katherine.
