Train derails north of Katherine

27 Dec, 2011 08:11 AM
ONE man is injured after a freight train derailment north of Katherine this morning.

Police and Emergency services are still trying to reach the scene of the train derailment, which reportedly occured around 5.30am.

Police said an Iron Ore train derailed just north of Edith Falls River Crossing.

According to initial reports one of the drivers has suffered a back injury, but the extent of the injury is not yet known.

The co-driver is reportedly uninjured.

"Police will use a helicopter to get officers and medical staff to the scene," Katherine Police Commander David Proctor.

"Police believe the train has about 20 carriages and the incident has led to a complete derailment."

"We need to ensure the scene is safe before investigations can begin into how the freight train came off the tracks," Commander Proctor said.
