Two women have lost their lives and a man has suffered head injuries in a tragic crash on the Victoria Highway.
Police said the crash happened at around 10.40pm 4km west of the Binjari turnoff, around 15km out of town.
Sergeant Mark Casey from the Major Crash Investigation Section said initial investigations would suggest that a 4WD towing a trailer attempted to avoid a female pedestrian on the road, but the woman was struck and killed instantly.
"The 4WD then lost control and impacted with a stationary vehicle, before colliding with another female pedestrian, who was also killed instantly," Sgt Casey said.
Police said driver of a Telstra vehicle was heading towards Katherine on the Victoria Highway, when his car collided with the west bound 4WD.
It is believed one of the women killed in the crash was sitting on the road and the other woman was standing next to her when they were hit by the car.
After the collision the Telstra car came to a rest in scrubland on the side of the road.
It is believed the driver suffered head injuries and had to be taken to hospital.
Police are still investigating Members from the Major Crash Investigation Section the Northern Traffic Command are still investigating at the scene and the Victoria Highway will remain closed in both directions until midday.
