 Farmer shoots starving cattle

Farmer shoots starving cattle

23 Jul, 2011 08:08 AM
A CATTLEMAN has started shooting his stock to save his animals from starving to death.

NT Chamber of Commerce chief executive Chris Young said the farmer was not able to afford to feed or water his cattle which were stranded on his property after the month-long ban of live cattle exports to Indonesia.

Although the ban has been lifted, cattlemen across the Northern Territory are still waiting for their animals to board ships to Indonesia, while even major agricultural companies such as Elders and Wellards have not been able to obtain export permits to send cattle to abattoirs in Indonesia.

Only last week the Northern Cattlemen's Association's Luke Bowen said he was "very frightened" about what the future would hold for the industry.

The Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce has now confirmed what many cattlemen had predicted in the past week - one farmer had to start shooting his animals.

"It was a situation where he had mustered his cattle and they were in a holding pen on his property (when the live export ban was put in place), but he couldn't ship them," Chris Young, Chamber of Commerce, said.

"So he had more cattle than he knew what to do with.

"He couldn't pay the fuel bill to pump the water to them or feed them so he felt like he had no choice as he was not going to let them starve to death."

Mr Young said he had been made aware of a number of farmers who were under the supervision of worried friends.

"There are a number of them being watched by their neighbours," he said.

Two weeks ago Donna Fraser from the Katherine Women's Crisis Centre had warned about the aftermath of the live export ban.

"We've seen suicide rates go up when times were tough.

"And the pressure that has been put on cattlemen and their families because of the ban can become too much for them to handle."

Well I hope and pray that one day Maryanne you wake up and find out why it is essential to Nth Aust.

How about you try and find out so that you actually know what you are talking about instead of believing a very biased program. Instead of being negative become helpful and raise money for stun guns etc.

That way you mightn't end up with suicides on your conscience and that way you mightn't end up feeling responsible for a economic and environmental disaster as well as the financial and cattle welfare disaster.

Sorry Jen that you feel so bad..! As far as animals are concerned, one day they will talk to us and tell us all about IT! Then there will be those that'll have BIG LUMPS OF EGG on their face. Consider this silent manority! Look in their eyes and tell them that they're not HURTING.. I'm sure they'll tell you something completely different. What about all those sheep floating around in that ship a few year's back, swaying to and fro, skidding, sliding, hurting, not being fed and finally dying and being thrown to the sharks! A disgrace. Find something else to do/earn your money.

Hi Jen'

I would be more than happy to raise money for stun guns if it means a better result for the cattle and sheep. You had over 10 years to fix the welfare problem why don't you ask the MLA why ? What I saw, was cattle being brutalized and begging for mercy. To me it shows the complete failure of the live export industry to ensure animals are treated as they would be in Australia.

Tell me please just where is perfection?

Do ships have accidents?

Do gas wells leak?

Will we mention oil wells?

Are people fat?

etc etc

Why do you expect our industry to achieve it?

However what I do know about is the welfare issues this is causing here in Au. I would suggest that you should go and look into our cattle eyes here too so you also understand.

And believe me the extra money we got from the live export trade was for their eyes not our eyes.

That is why we so badly need it.

With you there Jen, over people making uninformed judgement calls! What about the verbal bullying that everyone that is for live export has had to cop lately! I have stopped writing to educate, because I was sooo over the horrible things that were being sad to me and others. Even though most "stop cruelty -not live export person" has stayed level headed and nice!

100% with you Jen, these ''Pro live export ban" people probably do not have to work (hard) at all to bring food to the tables, they do not have any clue about how important the cattle industry is to this country's economics which affect not just our farmers but other Australians as well especially up here in the NT. Without the live export, we probably have to sell most of our land in the north to foreign mining companies. Just take a look at what happened to NZ, so many Kiwis have to leave their country.

Perhaps Miranda, Agriculture is not wanted up here at all - look at this fiasco RMW down Alice! What will that really achieve? No food production at all - nothing for vegans there! No management of feral animals -what happens when it gets a fire? Who benefits from this?

If we give up on those of Australia who are ignorant of the situation Northern Australia is positioned in with Live Export, and the people AND Animals that are reliant on it for their day to day living, we are as complicit in damaging our own country as they are. You know the "horrible things said" are Cr@p so keep on City.
