Record number of cattle sail to South East Asia

Record number of cattle sail to South East Asia

07 Dec, 2011 09:57 AM
A?live cattle export vessel has set a new world record for the largest shipment of live cattle.

Wellard's MV Ocean Shearer set the record on Saturday morning, when the vessel sailed from Darwin with 25,817 cattle, easily beating the ship's previous record of 24,683 head set in September earlier this year.

The vessel loaded in both Broome and Darwin, and was loaded by three different exporters, including Wellard.

Wellard's consignment of cattle was sourced from a range of individual producers across the country.

About 9000 steers and heifers were loaded in Broome and 15,500 cattle were loaded in Darwin.

The vessel will unload in the Indonesian ports of Jakarta and Panjang.

Wellard Trading chief executive officer Fred Troncone said the ability to assemble the large shipment wasn't just a reflection of supply, it also reflected strong demand from Indonesian importers and consumers.

Mr Troncone said while the onset of the northern Australian wet season was starting to restrict supply, Wellard expects to continue to export cattle during the wet season.

“The size and make-up of the Wellard shipping fleet, which is the most modern livestock fleet in the world, enables Wellard to tailor its export and shipping programs to match supply and demand,” Mr Troncone said.

“So we can be flexible whether we continue to use a larger vessel, or switch to one of our newer, smaller vessels,”?he said.

“Previously exports have ground to a halt during the wet season, but the production and transport systems have evolved to ensure it is a year-round trade.”

Cattle will be supplied to Indonesia and other South East Asian countries, providing an end market and price competition for cattle which are on either side of the Indonesian 350kg weight limit.

The MV Ocean Shearer is the largest livestock vessel in the world.

It was loaded at about 80 per cent of her capacity when she sailed to South East Asia.

Loading at 80 per cent of the vessel’s capacity allows the on-board stockmen and crew to allocate each animal significantly more space than the Australian regulatory standards prescribe.

So they have broken a record for squeezing even more cattle on board a crummy old ship have they? Well isnt that just something we should all be so proud of! Pfff barbaric idiots.

That is NOT something to be proud of at a time when this industry should be looking for viable alternatives and working towards the consequences of the inevitable closure of this trade in misery.

At the National Labor Conference on the weekend, delegates voted 215 to 173 against a four-year transitional phase out of live animal export, in favour of an increased chilled meat trade.

TWENTY TWO votes short of the desired outcome. The next vote WILL go our way and those whose blinkered focus is on the next shipment, the next dollar, the next animal to be exploited will be a record loser.

So now cattle can be supplied all year round. That is not what the industry was claiming when the trade was suspended. Not surprising though as this is an industry which has relied on deception for all of its history. The truth of this trade would make it entirely untenable and unsustainable to the majority of Australians.

Ban Vegan diets as latest research is that this diet is responsible for far more deaths than meat diets -

"This environmental damage is causing some well-known environmentalists to question their own preconceptions. British environmental advocate George Monbiot, for example, publically converted from vegan to omnivore after reading Simon Fairlie’s expose about meat’s sustainability. And environmental activist Lierre Keith documented the awesome damage to global environments involved in producing plant foods for human consumption".

So look after our invironments - ban vegan diets now!
