FRIDAY night was the Grand Final of the Sunrise Health U16 boys AFL competition, which has been going for the past 12 weeks.
The game saw the top teams - Junior Bombers versus the Katherine Camels - for the first title of U16 champs played in Katherine for many years.
The Bombers were strengthened by the return of Maxwell Gillet from boarding school and were favourites to win over the Camels who lost medal winner Liam MacGregor and Jesse Bettison along with Bradley Lewis to the Katherine High School’s end of year trip to Vietnam.
Both teams started well with the Bombers’ mid field getting the ball forward and the Camels’ backline holding up under the pressure.
The quarter time score was Bombers two goals to Camels one.
In the second quarter the Bombers really opened the game up with Jessiha Clyden and Loy Fordem getting the ball out of the middle and Caleb Clyden proving a handful up forward.
The Bomber kicked five goals and held a handy 43 point lead at the long break.
The Camels came out stronger in the third quarter with Tyron Fejo and Terrence Binsaad winning the ball and Kane Golding playing strongly.
The Camels kicked four goals for the quarter and got right back in the contest.
In the final quarter the Bombers steadied with Maxwell Gillett playing well in the ruck and Jessiha continuing to dominate the stoppages.
In the end the Bombers came away with a well deserved win 12.13.85 to the Camels’ 6.2.38.
Jessiha Clyden won the Sunrise Health Best on Ground medal for the Bombers and Liam MacGregor won the Beat Player of the Year medal for the Camels.
A big thank you to the umpires and all the officials that helped with the competition in itd first year.
A special thanks to Sunrise Health the YMCA, Katherine Town Council and the AFL Coles school program for their assistance.
