THE scent of petrol and the noise of low-cc engines filled the air at the Katherine showgrounds on the weekend when the Katherine Model Aero Club held its final IMAC competition of the year.
15 planes took to the sky in the International Miniature Aerobatic Competition that saw them aim for accurate manoeuvre sequence flights.
Katherine Pilot Curtis Oliver, 36, said since the club had started to fly IMACs in March, club members had “continuously improved their planes and their performances”.
“Before we had the competition here in Katherine everyone was more or less just flying in circles - now we’re all doing it for a purpose and everyone tries to get their skills up and beat their last scores,”?he said.
“It’s done wonders for the sport and everyone’s taken to it well.”
The club’s Lee Hunt said although the weekend’s competition was the final event for the year, he was looking forward to next year.
“We’re going to be bigger and better next year,”?he said.
The pilot, who came 7th in the National IMAC competition in Bedigo last month, said the club was going to hold a competition every six weeks in 2012 and a ‘Katherine Cracker IMAC’ July 1.
