ON SATURDAY, December 3, the Katherine Model Aero Club will be hosting the final international miniature aerobatic competition for the year.
These competitions can be found world wide and are devoted to the pursuit of excellence in aerobatic radio control aircraft flying.
It follows the full size aerobatic rules and sequences.
The competition is divided into five categories: Basic for beginners, moving through to sportsman, intermediate, advanced and ultimate, with each category getting harder as you move up the scale.
Basic, sportsman and intermediate categories will be flown at our competition here in Katherine, with pilots coming from Darwin, as well as our own local heroes.
It will involve each pilot performing a preset sequence of 10 different manoeuvres with each manoeuvre being judged individually and scores tallied up at the end of each flight.
Some of the manoeuvres have funny sounding names like ‘Hammer Head’, ‘Sharks Tooth’, ‘Humpty Bumpty’ and ‘Immellman’, so you can be sure that there is going to be quite a bit of crazy talk and flying going on out at the airfield.
The public is welcome to come out to the flying field on Saturday morning and watch the spectacle, which is located in the middle of the racecourse (just follow the ‘Flying Field’ signs).
There will be drinks and sausage sangas available for purchase around lunchtime and people available to explain what is actually happening in and around the competition.
