The event is being held over three days with Friday being a practice day and then the full on competition being held over the Saturday and Sunday of the weekend.
IMAC stands for “International Miniature Aerobatic Competition” and uses very similar rules and routines to those performed by real piloted planes in their own competitions.
The routines are based on a very high degree of precision flying and all ten manoeuvres in each sequence are judged individually and evaluated by two or more judges looking for the pilot who can best perform them according to set rules and regulations.
What will make this competition so exciting is the fact that there will be 26 different pilots coming to this event from as far away as New Zealand as well as New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia as well as our own local heroes from Katherine and Darwin.
Frazer Briggs of New Zealand will be coming and he is the current three times world champion in IMAC and has also won the last two years Australian Championships.
The IMAC competition is split into five different categories starting with Basic, Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced and Unlimited sections.
Each category gets much harder as your flying abilities improve so there will be a lot of spectacular flying to watch as the pros get into their routines.
Another feature of this event is that there will also be a freestyle category which is where you have four minutes to carry out a routine set to music which is judged on precision as well as artistic ability to accompany the music of your choice.
This will be the biggest event in the Territory of its kind and Katherine Model Aero Club wishes to thank the support of the NT Government, Willem Westra van Holthe, the Mayor, Fay Miller and the Katherine Town Council without whom this event would not be able to take place.
Katherine Model Aero Club would also like to thank their sponsors for the weekend, the Australian Scale Aerobatic Association and Aeromodellers NT.
The public is encouraged to come out and view this spectacular event in the middle of the racecourse at the Katherine Showgrounds on the Saturday and Sunday.
There will be food and drinks for sale, young children however must be supervised as there will be strict no go areas around the planes pit areas and flight lines.
