There are many people in the Katherine region who do not hesitate to go the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of their friends, families and the community they live in. Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.

Helping people and loving her job are the qualities that make people like Mandy Paradise stand out in our community.
As St John’s Officer in charge of the Katherine region, Mandy is exceptional at her job, mainly because of her genuine desire to help people with her caring and friendly nature.
Previously Mandy was a nurse, having trained at the NT University, Darwin and changed occupations almost seven years ago to become a paramedic.
Mandy’s outside interests are also of the caring nature - as she has been a participant in the 'Relay for Life' with the Cancer Council.
Before coming to Katherine Mandy was in Nhulunbuy, so she knows the Top End well.
Although, she hails from Exmouth in Devon originally.
If you haven’t crossed paths with her professionally, you may know her as the cool chick on the Harley who rides around town.
Mandy loves her job as a paramedic - mainly because she has the ability to help people and to be there for them during emergency situations.
She has said she has actually lost count of how many accidents she has attended, because unfortunately there have been so many.
She said that the most frustrating part of the job is seeing so many avoidable situations; such as an accident from speeding or unrestrained passengers.
Also, she feels especially saddened when there are young people involved, as she has children of her own.
We can be consider ourselves lucky to have Mandy as one of our emergency workers - and although we hope we never have to come across her in a professional capacity; we can be assured that whether privately or professionally we have community members who truly do care that we are safe.
