The first fire at the public housing units 'Carramar Flats' on Riverbank Drive was reported just after 5am this morning.
While Katherine firefighters were battling the blaze another fire started at another unit at the same complex.
Fire investigations are still ongoing.
"We were at the scene fighting the fire when a second fire was discovered by police." - Katherine Station Officer Chris Manuel
Darwin fire investigator Station Officer Phil Morrissy said both fires started under the stairs in the vacant units but the exact cause was still undetermined.
Katherine Station Officer Chris Manuel said nine firefighters with three appliances were at the scene to battle the blazes.
He said both fires are being treated as suspicious and it is likely that they were caused by an arsonist.
Also this morning a car was destroyed in a fire after it crashed into a tree on the Victoria Highway, west of Katherine.
