Monster toads collected in Katherine

MONSTER cane toads weighing up to half a kilogram were collected during a toad bust in Katherine last week.

Around 50 toad hunters joined forces as part of the YMCA’s school holiday event program, which saw more than 42 kilograms of toads being collected from all over Katherine.

Parks and Wildlife Community Education Officer Clare Pearce said the toad bust had been a great effort to keep the invasive species that are poisonous to native wildlife under control.

“Some animals that rely on frogs for a large proportion of their diet have had their numbers decreased quite a bit by the toads,” Ms Pearce said. “The toads are toxic to most animals, they also have very large numbers of young that develop quickly outcompeting native frogs.”

The YMCA held the toad bust in an aim to try to limit the numbers of toads in the Katherine region.
