THERE are many people in the Katherine region who do not hesitate to go the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of their friends, families and the community they live in.
Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
PETER Fletcher has worked hard to create a better environment for families in his community, and now has even more reason with a new marriage and first child.
Born and raised in Ngukurr, Peter, 24, has notched up a notable collection of qualifications and awards.
His unflinching dedication and enduring passion have driven him through a double university degree in criminology and psychology to his current work with the NT Early Intervention Pilot Program.
Peter and other public servants work with police to tackle binge drinking in local youth with an overall aim to create a more positive relationship between police and young people.
When his passion shifted into crime prevention over the years, Peter was stoked to be able to couple police work with community youth engagement in his current role.
Territory judging panels highlighted Peter's efforts, naming him a finalist in the Pride of Australia Medal for youth leadership last year, and a semi finalist in this year's NT Young Achiever Awards career achievement section.
His work taps into a complex and troubled social web, but Peter takes one day at a time.
“I suppose while it’s easy to look at the huge generational and attitudinal shift that we need to happen, it's good to be able to see changes in individual police officers and individual kids,” he says.
When asked what feeds his unwavering purpose, Peter is quick to answer.
“Mum has been in remote area health for 30 years and is absolutely committed to empowering Aboriginal people."
