Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.
IT IS no secret that recruiting young people to help young people gleans big benefits from empowering the individual and in turn injecting strength into the community.
Twenty-three-year-old Tylee Wirth recently resolved to close a gap for local youth by setting up the Katherine Regional Youth Group.
Still in its infancy since being founded only just more than a week ago, the group aims to tackle alcohol, drugs, petrol sniffing, and general wellbeing by creating a special space.
Tylee also hopes to make it a component of the KRAAS Healing Pathways project.
She also hopes her seat on the Youth Minister’s Roundtable of Young Territorians will feed into her work with the Youth Group and vice versa.
When asked what really drives her, Tylee says she wants to create a proper voice for young people.
“I’ve been ‘told’ a lot throughout my life and people often project their experiences, but people forget young people have their own experiences,” she said.
“I get really motivated and excited when I sit in a group of young people; there is so much potential.”
Her work is also a way to set up a better future for her young daughter.
In between looking after her child and doing two psychology degrees, Tylee doesn’t have much spare time.
But when she can get out, she immerses herself in the great outdoors.
“I really love fishing and being outdoors with my family.
“I’m really all about positivity and motivation.”
Every week the Community Hero celebrated in the Katherine Times receives at $50 Nitmiluk Gorge meal voucher.
