AN EIGHTEEN-year-old man faced court on Monday after he crashed a stolen car into a light pole and injured his 17-year-old female passenger.
Acting Sergeant Darryl Slater said at about 10.40pm on Friday Katherine police, fire and ambulance crews attended the crash at the intersection of Victoria Highway and Zimin Drive Katherine.
The unlicensed driver had allegedly been travelling at high speed in a Toyota Starlet which had previously been stolen in Darwin.
“The vehicle veered off the road before plowing through a light pole and trapping a female passenger inside.
“The driver fled the scene however later handed himself into police custody and was arrested,” A/Sgt Slater said.
The passenger had to be cut free from the vehicle and was taken to hospital with a second passenger, aged 15.
Both teenagers suffered minor injuries.
The driver was charged with recklessly endangering serious harm, drive manner dangerous, driving unlicensed, aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle and damage to property.
