A MAN wanted in relations to the murder of a 54-year-old man is still on the run from police.
Members from the Territory Response Group (TRG) have spent another night scouring bushland around Darwin’s rural area of Berry Springs for wanted alleged murderer, Jonathon Andrew Stenberg, 48, who is believed to have mureded a man in New South Wales earlier this month.
Commander Richard Bryson said police have received a large volume of phone calls with information regarding suspicious activity in Darwin's rural area and are currently investigating numerous reports and following up lines of inquiry.
“We've responded to numerous reports of activity and movement in the primary search area overnight. Acting on intelligence we believe the areas where our resources are currently concentrated are appropriate to maximise the likelihood of locating Mr Stenberg," Commander Bryson said.
“Members from the TRG are highly qualified and trained to deal with this type of situation and are using all available resources such as the Bear Cat and General Purpose Dogs.
“After further examination of the vehicle we can now reveal that amongst the rifle and personal effects seized, Police have located a number of items such as camping equipment, solar panels and long life food.
“These items indicate to us that Mr Stenberg was planning on being self sufficient for an extended period of time.
“As time goes by people tend to reflect on their actions and I urge Mr Stenberg to contact police.
"NT Police do not want a confrontation or harm brought upon Officers, members of the public or Mr Stenberg.
“This is a very fluid situation and the public should continue monitoring local media and the 'Northern Territory Police Force' Facebook page for updates. Speculation and rumours are unhelpful in these situations; please report any information directly to police.”
While there is a high police presence in the area, the public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
The community is reminded Mr Stenberg is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached under any circumstances.
A road block north of Katherine remains in place and travellers are urged to slow down and take extra care when approaching the area.
