A 19-year-old male pedestrian was struck by a small truck on Katherine Terrace near the Visitor Information Centre just after 3am this morning.
He was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance before being conveyed to Katherine Hospital. Careflight later medivacced the man to Darwin. He is in a critical condition.
“At this stage it appear the male was running across the road towards the Visitor Centre, he failed to see the oncoming truck and ran straight out in front of it,” Senior Constable 1st Class Mark Soligo, Officer in Charge of the Northern Traffic Operation Unit said.
“The driver of the truck attempted to avoid the male but unfortunately he was struck by the front of the truck receiving very serious head injuries.
The accident left the Katherine man with severe chest and abdominal injuries.
“We do not believe that speed was a factor,” Sen Const Soligo said.
The horror smash comes only days after a man was killed when he walked along Florina Road.
On Friday night a 19-year-old was struck by a vehicle and died at the scene.
Police and St John ambulance members attended the crash, however, the male was deceased upon their arrival.
One lane of Florina Road was closed to traffic until mid Saturday morning while crash investigators probed the incident. The 18-year-old female driver of the vehicle was not injured but was treated by ambulance staff at the scene for shock.
“At this stage it appears that the male was walking west along Florina Road in the middle of the eastbound lane, the driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid him and has struck him causing fatal injuries,” Sen Const Soligo said.
“Our enquiries are continuing, however with regards to the driver we do not believe that alcohol or speed were factors and we are awaiting results as to whether the deceased male was affected by alcohol.”
On June 20 Katherine man Mitch Jones also died on Florina Road when the motorbike he was riding collided with a ute at the Phoenix Park turn off.
