Woman sexually assaulted

THE community is being called on to aid police in their investigations following a reported sexual assault which took place in Katherine on Sunday night.

Detective Sergeant Andy Bedwell from the Northern Investigation Section said a 46-year-old woman was allegedly attacked and sexually assaulted by a 38-year-old male between 6pm and 8.30pm on Sunday evening.

“The incident occurred in parkland adjacent to the intersection of Giles Street and Railway Terrace... The female victim was able to escape her attacker and ran to a nearby phone where she contacted Police on triple zero,” Detective Sergeant Bedwell said.

Police said the 38-year-old man was arrested shortly after in the vicinity of where the alleged assault took place.

“This incident appears to be a random attack and the two were not known to each other.”

The alleged attacker was subsequently charged on Monday with one count of sexual intercourse without consent and one count of aggravated assault.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Katherine Magistrates Court yesterday.

Police are calling for public assistance and urge anyone who may have seen anything in the vicinity of Railway Terrace on Sunday night to contact Police on 131 444 or on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
