'Stupid' drunk hoon rolls car in carpark

A drunk man led police on a foot chase after rolling his car at a popular tourist spot yesterday afternoon.

Police said at about 2pm on Wednesday they were advised of the rolled car at the Low Level carpark.

Acting Superintendent Gavin Kennedy said a 25-year-old male driver who had been drinking lost control of a Toyota Cressida sedan whilst doing burnouts and donuts.

"The driver fled the scene upon the attendance of Katherine police units and after a foot chase was apprehended on Riverbank Drive in Katherine South," A/Supt Kennedy said.

The 16-year-old passenger was also rounded up by police.

The driver was arrested and required to submit to a breath analysis which gave a reading of 0.191 per cent. Last night police were waiting for the man to sober up before he will be charged with high range drink driving along with six other traffic charges.

"Members of the public enjoying this normally idyllic location and their property were put at risk by this stupid behaviour," A/Supt Kennedy said.

"Official road safety data does not recognise stupidity or when stupid behaviour becomes dangerous behaviour.

"It was very lucky noone was injured."

Police urge residents and visitors to report hoons and suspected drink drivers by phoning 131444.
