NT election candidate questionnaires - Cerise King

The one, paramount issue I want to tackle should I be elected local member for Katherine is:

Reconciliation - and the whole debate around Law and Order.

The following three personal qualities make me the best person to represent Katherine:

Positive, passionate and local

If elected I am going to make a positive change

- for the entire community by:

Being a strong voice in Government on behalf of the Katherine township; an advocate with influence.

- for young people by:

Improved sporting facilities, more events, theatre and cultural arts, and in general more things to keep one occupied to express their individuality. The younger people have my ear and I will be an energetic advocate on their behalf.

- for seniors by:

Through my upbringing I have always been taught to give elders the utmost respect. Our seniors built this town, developed our Katherine culture, and contributed to our prosperity; therefore any programmes and facilities that enhance their quality of life will get my energetic backing.

- for local business owners by:

Continuing to buy locally and encourage others to do so as well; therefore the money stays in the town to stimulate Katherine’s economy.

- for volunteer and not-for-profit groups by:

Helping identify options for Territory Government funding, assisting with fundraising and bringing any challenges to the attention of my counterparts in parliament.

- for sporting groups by:

To work with local government and the Territory government to ensure

- for the arts and crafts community by:

Making the Godinymarn Yijard Centre Katherine’s cultural heart. Unlike the CLP I will continue to support the further development of Godinymarn Yijard Centre as a store of our history, and a sharing of our culture with others.

- for tourism in the Katherine region by:

Support initiatives that bring tourists to our town. I would promote the town’s cultural and environmental resources to encourage visitors to stay an extended period of time to explore more than the main tourist attractions.

- for the beautification of our town by:

To maintain a strong relationship with the Katherine Town Council and support them where possible at a Territory level.

- for the environment in the region by:

Supporting the Henderson Government’s Greener Territory policies, encouraging the locals to participate in the Cash for Containers scheme and being a strong voice in Government on behalf of the environmental groups and volunteers in the region for the tireless work.

My stance on Opal fuel in Katherine is:

It is up to the people of Katherine, there has to be thorough community consultation, with all the information on the table. An outcome that is owned by the whole community. I will be listening and acting upon what Katherine wants.

Each candidate was given a catalogue of questions relating to the life in the Katherine region.

In next week’s Katherine Times:

Read what the candidates have to say to public drinking problems and crime in Katherine, what they think the future holds for our town, how they would improve the quality of living in Katherine, what they think key weaknesses of their opponents in this election are, and what their plans are if they don’t win the election.
