In Katherine, a small- but-vocal group had its voice heard.

Coinciding with associated protests in Borroloola, Nightcliff, Alice Springs and Casuarina, the activists hung a yellow banner from the old railway bridge bearing the slogan “Don’t Frack the NT”.

Protest leader and Don’t Frack Katherine chair Charmaine Roth said the group was pleased with the outcome of the demonstration.

“Everyone felt like they got to have their bit of a say,” she said.

The method of extracting gas reserves – fracking – has been blamed for contamination of groundwater supplies across the world. 

Currently, the NT government is awaiting the result of a feasibility study, which is investigating the need of installing a gas pipeline to run through the region, and connect the Territory with the national gas grid.

Last month, Katherine Town Council called for a municipality-wide exclusion zone to be introduced.
