The team kicked off its 2014 campaign with a thumping 35-12 win against the Barbarians 2 line-up on October 17.
Pirates’ players Thomas Watego’s rugby union career started on a high note as he beat several props to score near the post in his maiden clash.
In the other game in round one, Brahmans proved they will be a force to be reckoned with, despite going down 10-nil to a fired-up Barbarians 1 in a physical encounter.
KRU president Marc Gardner said it was a strong start to the season and said the community support had been “spectacular”.
“Overall, it was a great night and fantastic to see rugby back in Katherine,” he said.
“I’m keen to see the community get behind rugby in Katherine and, as always, welcome new and old players and volunteers who want to help the clubs out.
“It’s never too late to come along.
“It doesn’t really matter about your rugby skill levels, as long as we have lots of players, we’ll have a great competition.
“Thanks to Arthur Aranui and Tim Biggs for refereeing, and the Katherine Sports and Recreation Club and volunteers for the field preparations, it made for two top-quality games.
“Thanks also to the Katherine Krocs Rugby Club for their support with running the barbecue.”
