In addition to her hectic duties as a local police officer and full-time mother to her three children, Mrs Engels can now add champion bodybuilder to her growing list of achievements.
Earlier this month, Mrs Engels competed in the World Fitness Federation World Championships on the Gold Coast and managed to finish in an impressive fifth place.
It was a stellar result for the Katherinite, who was competing against women from countries including New Zealand, China, Korea, South Africa, England and Russia after only taking up the sport professionally in 2012.
Mrs Engels said the decision to bodybuild came about as a result of helping other people achieve their goals.
“I was a personal trainer and running boot camps for people who had all these different goals, and I felt like I needed to have a goal, too, so I picked bodybuilding as a random thing to do,” she explained.
With her coach based in Melbourne, her husband, Rob, is like a second coach and is extremely supportive.
“I wouldn’t be human if I said there were times I wished I didn’t have to weigh or prepare the food, but the couple of times I felt like I was too tired and it was taking a toll, my husband has been very motivating and reminds me of how far I’ve come,” Mrs Engels said.
With a raft of upcoming events – including the next world championships – to look forward to, there’s no slowing down for the Top End supermum.
“My sights are firmly set on [the next world championships in] 2016, even though the location hasn’t been announced yet,” she said.
“It’s too big of a thought but I suppose winning the gold would be my goal.”
