Just how much to we adore our sausages?
The answer is a staggering 52,000 kilograms a year.
In the lead-up to Australia Day, the supermarket giant unveiled its top stores for sausage sales across the country, with the Katherine store trumping every other Woolworths in the Territory.
The top gong went to Gracemere in Queensland, which proved to be the nation’s biggest snag-loving suburb, with the local Woolworths recording the highest number of sausage sales in the country.
Woolworths Katherine store manager said shoppers punched above their weight by putting more than a tonne of sausages in their trolleys every week of the year.
“The Woolworths Katherine store sells about one tonne of sausages per week,” he explained.
“Sales of sausages [in Katherine] nearly double in the week leading up to Australia Day.”
Proving it is tough to topple a classic, the traditional pork is the most popular variety in Katherine, with other exotic varieties - including crocodile sausages and chicken with sautéed onion sausages - also whetting the appetites of shoppers.
