The accident occurred while the man was attempting to prune a tree with a chainsaw on a Katherine property.
Family members found the man on the ground with critical injuries beside the tree after a branch fell and knocked him off a ladder.
He was initially taken to Katherine Hospital with multiple injuries, but a CareFlight doctor and nurse flew to the town before St John Ambulance paramedics took the man to the CareFlight base at Katherine Airport.
The man remained in a critical condition on his arrival at Royal Darwin Hospital at about 7pm.
