The infestation is in aid of the 2015 Kintore Street School Croc Race, during which the plastic reptiles will go head to head in a journey to Katherine’s Low Level Bridge.
Katherinites and tourists alike are expected to line the High Level Bridge for the start of the race at 8.30am on Saturday, with east south-easterly winds of up to 17 kilometres per hour set to test the thoroughbred racing crocodiles.
Kintore Street School administration officer Suzi White said, although the day was a lot of fun for staff and students, it was driven by a serious goal.
“We are all very excited about the event,” she told the Katherine Times.
“It's a chance for a great day of fun and entertainment, and it definitely gives the students sense of school pride for sure.
“We’re fundraising for shade for our new playground equipment and a special wheelchair swing.”
The crocodiles can be purchased for $10, with the fastest one down the river set to win its owner $1000.
Ms White said the owner of every 100th competitor across the line after that would win $50, as well as a plaster replica of their “champion racing croc”.
