The 31-year-old from the Kalkarindji area was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital after being discovered near the Katherine Country Club on Friday morning.
He is out of danger in hospital and has been able to speak to police.
The investigation is continuing into how he received his injuries.

KATHERINE police are calling for public assistance after a man was found with apparent head injuries on Pearce Street at about 12am on May 22.
The man – who is yet to be identified – was located near the Katherine Country Club in a semi-conscious state and police are appealing for witnesses to help shed light on how he suffered his injuries.
He was transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital by CareFlight.
Northern Territory Police Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the man is described as being aged in his mid to late 20s, with an olive complexion, a goatee beard, and dark hair, which is “slightly long at the back”.
He was wearing a dark-patterned t-shirt, jeans and skate shoes with red laces.
