For medical student Melanie Kahl, the opportunity to talk to current students was a “little bizarre”, as it was not too long ago that she was in their shoes.
Ms Kahl will complete her Bachelor of Medicine at the end of 2015 and was back in town to tell the students about pathways into health.
“I was lucky to get assistance from my Mum, who works in careers guidance, but not everyone got that help, so it was really great to go back and speak to kids in Katherine,” she said.
Ms Kahl was taking part in an initiative of NT Medicare Local, which organised rural high school visits throughout the Top End and central Australia.
Diana Carli-Seebohm, project officer in future initiatives at NT Medicare Local, told the Katherine Times that the program focused on the concept of “growing our own”.
“We select current tertiary students to come and do these visits based on their own stories and backgrounds, and how we think they’ll go,” she explained.
