July 28 marked the first 100 days in the classroom for the school’s 62 Transition students – and they celebrated, education-style.
Teacher Bernice McPhee explained to the Katherine Times that the idea to mark the milestone stemmed from a daily counting activity with the students.
“Each morning, we mark another day off on the school calendar, and every 10 school days, we put a coloured straw in the jar,” she explained.
“It’s been shown that counting in multiples of 10 is an effective way to learn, so we wanted to make reaching 100 something to aim for.”
The day included a number of 100-themed activities, with each of the three Transition classes taking part.
Along with teachers Chantelle Sweeney and Christine Koch, the activities included making necklaces by stringing 100 Fruit Loops, doing various exercises in multiples of 10, making cupcakes decorated with 100 sprinkles, and showing how well they could write their name on their 100th day of school.
While the five- and six-year-olds in Transition spend most of their days learning the fundamentals, the milestone day also included a foray into the world of technology.
As a special treat, the students got to upload images of their faces to the smartphone app Oldster, so they could glimpse at what they might look like 100 years from now, in the year 2115.
