It is believed that the 38-year-old victim was found unconscious in his taxi after he was allegedly assaulted near the Katherine Hotel at about 3.40am on Sunday.
He suffered head and facial injuries, and was placed on mobile intensive care monitoring before he was airlifted to Darwin for treatment.
The victim was in a critical condition when he arrived at Royal Darwin Hospital at about 10am on Sunday, but police confirmed that they hoped to speak to him on August 31 after scans ruled out significant head injuries.
A friend of the victim, who asked not to be named, said they were “totally stunned”.
“I don’t know what else to say,” they said.
“You don’t hear about this sort of thing in a small town like Katherine when a bloke’s trying to make a living.”
Police urge anyone who may have information about the incident to contact 13 14 44 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
