The students received the grant after their teacher, Melanie Norton, shared an inspiring video demonstrating the passion they had developed for the sport since it was introduced to the school only a year ago.

After Ms Norton mentioned the idea of playing netball to students in Years 5 to 7, the push gathered momentum and players have not looked back.

Ms Norton said the students were excited to learn a new sport. 

“We don’t have a netball court at school, so, at each training session, we have to draw our own lines in chalk on the school basketball court,” she said.

“We’re very grateful to ANZ for the uniform grant.”

The school’s winning entry was picked from more than 1000 ANZ Netball Nation grant program nominations. 

As a result, senior students at Kalkaringi School were awarded head-turning warm-up tracksuits, shoes and netball equipment that will help them develop their skills.

“It was good fun to win the shoes and tracksuit, we like using them to play netball,” student Shenita said. 

“I thank them for everything."

"It was fun and inspiring to win the grant,” another student, Briniece, said.

“I'm really proud of us netball girls."

Several of the students visited Melbourne recently for a netball tournament which gave them a chance to use their new equipment.

"It was good and awesome,” student Nazeera said.

“All the kids liked wearing the tracksuits in Melbourne". 

There are a number of sports played at the school but, in the past year, netball has proven to be one of the most popular team sports offered.

ANZ has supported the Netball Nation grants program since 2014, and it offers support to the Australian netball community.

Individuals, teams and clubs were invited to apply for a chance to win equipment, uniforms and coaching.

The bank’s district manager, Philip Brown, said it was great to be able recognise and reward such a dedicated and enthusiastic school for its love of netball. 

“These uniforms will allow the Kalkaringi students to feel united, which will help build their confidence both on and off the netball court,” he said.
