The campaign, which rewards drivers who provide a blood alcohol reading of zero when they are breathalysed, was launched on Christmas Eve in a bid to provide Katherinites with an extra incentive for promoting safe roads.
As part of Sober Streets, drivers who blow zero have an opportunity to win one of four $500 accounts at the Katherine Community Bank.
While some drivers – including a 26-year-old female who blew 0.259% after rolling her four-wheel-drive near Pine Creek on January 10 – put themselves and others at risk by hitting the road after too many drinks, campaign co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Meghan Funnell said the reaction had been extremely positive.
“We’ve had positive comments in relation to the campaign,” she told the Katherine Times.
“It’s for drivers who are doing the right thing.
“I hope it’s made people think twice about getting behind the wheel.”
She added that Sober Streets had been so successful that it could potentially be rolled out in other parts of the Northern Territory.
The campaign concludes on January 27.
