Organiser Toni Tapp-Coutts invited 14 women to speak about their experiences as indigenous women.
“Coming to the Women of the World conference two or three years ago here in Katherine, I thought that we could transfer that concept to a much smaller indigenous conference,” she said.
“We have all indigenous speakers ... it’s about empowering women, giving them the confidence to talk about themselves [and] their business, and I think it’s best to do that in a really small, intimate setting.”
Alice Beilby was one of the speakers, as she is active around the Katherine region assisting individuals and communities to develop business and social enterprise opportunities.
“It’s talking about how we can help each other to actually get into the business space and it can be very confusing,” she said.
“It can be hard to get into business at the best of times, so it’s just about inspiring and connecting with women, and providing some information for them.”
During her presentation, Ms Beilby spoke to Margaret Duncan and Selena Uibo, whom both have different experiences in running a business.
It was important to share the stories, Ms Beilby said, as delegates might have projects that they wanted to do in their own communities.
“It’s support, but also, we’ve been through it, so we know what all the pitfalls are,” she said.
