The team made the journey to Palmerston over the May Day long weekend for the Touch Football NT 2016 NT Titles and picked up the silverware in the open women’s division with a faultless performance.
Katherine fielded teams in the open women’s and mixed under-18 divisions, with the younger line-up progressing as far as the hotly-contested semi-final.
Loius Kossack and Jess Budarick led the try scoring with 10 each, while Jens Amberg-Pedersen, Ava Lynch and Charlotte Pickering were standouts during the competition.
The open women’s team, which was coached by Jay and Crystal Browne, overcame the usual Stuart Highway travel obstacle and toppled the more-fancied Darwin outfits with only nine players, a superb result considering most teams boasted 14 players.
The win represented a historic moment for the sport in Katherine, as the Rebels were the first local team to claim a Territory touch football title.
The victorious open women’s team consisted of captain-coach Browne, Marlee Gundersen, Michelle Duggan, Ebany McCombes, Tiffany Woodall, Miffy Bond, Jess Hillen, Deanna Peckham and Mateeka Nielson.
