The medal, which is presented by the Parramatta Eels, recognises the achievements of NT students in the classroom and on the sporting field, and is based on the principles of preparation, attitude, respect, responsibility and achievement.
Casuarina Street Primary School was one of 20 schools asked to choose a recipient for the medal, with Year 4 student Toby Daley securing the honour ahead of nominees from the 13 other classes.
As part of his prize, Toby received a certificate of participation and four tickets to the June 11 NRL clash between the Eels and the Gold Coast Titans, with the medal itself to be presented on the field at half-time.
Toby was nominated for “getting on with his learning” and going the extra mile to achieve personal bests.
He said he could not wait to head to Darwin to watch the game and get his hands on his medal.
“It’s exciting,” he told the Katherine Times after Friday’s assembly.
“I’m looking forward to going to the game and on the field.”
Health, fitness and physical education teacher Rodney Gregg praised the 10-year-old and said it had been exceptionally difficult to select a winner.
“Toby is the kind of student that does not seek out any recognition,” Mr Gregg said.
“The competition was really fierce, as it involved the whole school.
“Students didn’t know of their nomination, so all tried at all times, not just in the classroom.
“It flowed into the playground, at recess and at lunch, as well as on the sporting field.
“Toby displayed all aspects of the PARRA Medal in class by helping his classmates with tasks they may find difficult, and tries just as hard on the sporting field, too.”
