Co-director of Indigenous Hip Hop Projects Dion Brownfield and K-Town Dance Massive showed off their skills at Katherine High last Thursday as a “taste of what’s to come”.
“Performances and showcases at Territory Day are a big celebration of what it means to be living and contributing to live in the territory,” he said.
Director of Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre Suzanne Fermanis said they were thrilled to be approached by FestivalsNT to organise Territory Day in Katherine for the second year running and to bring back the highly successful K-town's Dance Massive as part of the celebrations.
"K-town's Dance Massive offers us a unique opportunity to get the entire community involved in celebrating life in the Katherine Region through dance and movement, and be proud to be Territorian," she said.
K-Town’s Dance Massive artistic director Bec Reid said it was an honour to be asked back anywhere, but especially for Territory Day in Katherine.
“[We have] a really diverse cast of local community performers,” she said.
“That’s really what the show is celebrating, the good people of K-Town.”
Bronte Wright has been helping to run the event and said the event relies on a lot of people.
“K-town's Dance Massive, an initiative created by Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre, will be presented as part of the Northern Territory Government’s Territory Day event to bring the community of Katherine together to celebrate what it is to be Territorian and what makes Katherine special,” she said.
“Katherine Town Council and NT Friendship and Support are also supporting the event.”
Gates will open at Katherine Showground from 5.30pm on Friday, July 1 with dancers expected to take the stage after 6.30pm and fireworks to follow at 7.30pm.
Guests are reminded to leave personal fireworks at home as there will be plenty set off on the night as part of the official display.
Food stalls available and the event is alcohol free.
