A GROUP of Katherine schoolgirls are preparing to travel to Perth in October where they will represent the Northern Territory in the under 12 Australian School Sports Touch Championships.

Competing against teams from the Palmerston and Alice Springs regions the Katherine girls tied for first, winning three of the four matches.
Charlize Simmonds, Nyokah James, Kayla Costello, Jasmine Glass, Elyssia Talon-Rosas were selected in the team while Brianna Simmonds and Taylor Hohn were selected as reserves.
Katherine coach Tim East said along with being a competitive tournament, it was also a great opportunity for the girls to network.
“They only had a small amount of teams this year so the girls really got to meet other girls from Alice Springs and Palmerston,” he said.
“Some of the girls were in the (Northern Territory) team last year so they got to meet and catch up again.”
The Katherine team came into this year’s competition firm favourites after they were undefeated last year.
However, their competition hopes took a blow on the first day when they lost to Alice Springs.
Showing the true Katherine spirit, they rallied on the second day winning both of their matches to tie for first and have the highest number of NT representatives out of the three teams.
East said the great results the girls achieved were a reflection of the effort they put in during the weeks prior to the competition.
“I was very impressed with the effort they put in, they’ve been training for about 10 weeks,” he said.
