Fifteen-year-old Jasmine, a Year Nine student at St Joseph’s Catholic College, competed for the NT team at the championships across most of the swimming disciplines.

Mother Tammie said while she didn’t reach the finals, she still managed to beat her personal best times.

Plus she scored a silver medal competing in a combined relay event during the championships.

Jasmine’s favorite strokes are backstroke and butterfly and her favorite distance is 200 metres.

“Later on she will get to specialise more but at the moment its important to be able to compete in most of the events,” Mrs Harris said.

“She plans to continue with her swimming, it is something she has enjoyed doing since she was very little.”

Dedication to the sport comes at a personal and family cost.

“When the pool is open she trains morning and night, up to 10 sessions in a week,” Mrs Harris said.

“During the swimming season, from October through to May, it may involve fortnightly trips to Darwin to compete.

“It’s a lot of hard work but she really enjoys it,” Mrs Harris said.
