Travel company Discountmyflights Group last week named Katherine as the only NT winner in its contest.

The group said Katherine’s best features were its natural beauty.

Through the Katherine Times’ website, we asked readers what they thought?

Of almost 100 results, most people acknowledged they were local residents but thought the number one status was a bit much.

“We do alright” received 45 per cent of the support with slightly less for the number one elevation.

When asked what people thought was the best thing about Katherine the responses were mixed.

The Gorge, hot springs and Cutta Cutta Caves, received a lot of support.

Others remarked on the arts and festivals, the weather, the Katherine Outback Experience, coffee shops and the “laid back temperament of its people”.

“It’s so unique, you can’t narrow it down to the best thing because it has so much to offer,” was one response to the survey.

“Where it’s situated, so much natural beauty surrounding Katherine,” was another.

“Everyone should visit School of the Air to see how it operates, fascinating.”

The town’s hot springs received the majority of support.

The survey also asked people to suggest what would make Katherine even better?

A ten-pin bowling alley, was one suggestion. a water park was another. Some people would like to see the historic Springvale homestead reopening for tourists and locals alike.

Support was also given for ore public visual art, less drugs and crime, more entertainment, and efforts to stop the stray dogs or provide a dog exercise park.

Other reader provided a longer response: “More places displaying or providing information on Aboriginal culture, etc. Also no fracking as it will destroy the aquifers and beautiful waterways of the region.” Others wanted more rodeos and direct flights to capital cities
