Police claim the 31-year-old man stole a truck at Berrimah, near Darwin, early yesterday.
The stolen truck, the alleged thief, and an “unwilling” female were picked up by police at a Katherine caravan park.
A GPS transponder in the truck meant police were able to track and ultimate locate the truck.
Police also claim the man unlawfully entered a transport business in Berrimah looking for items to steal.
Police Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the man first pocketed an Ipod, then a charger and then he located the keys to a semi trailer.
“He then started up the semi, hitched up a flat bed trailer and headed off to Katherine,” Supt Jorgensen said.
“When the manager started work Wednesday morning he noticed the rig missing and called the police. CCTV was interrogated and clearly showed the actions of the offender.
“The GPS in the rig was activated and showed the semi was in Katherine.”
Katherine police apprehended the offender near a van park - along with the alleged unwilling female he had picked up along the way.
Supt Jorgensen said the man appeared intoxicated but refused a breath test.
“He was conveyed to Katherine hospital where a sample of his blood was taken for analysis. He was then lodged in the cells.”
She said the man has now been charged with a swathe of offences including unlawful use of motor vehicle, stealing, drive disqualified and deprivation of liberty.
Bail was refused and he is due to make his first appearance in Katherine Court today.
