Police, community and religious leaders, emergency services personnel, military and members of the public paid their respect at the graveside of Bill Condon, a policeman killed in the line of duty in 1952.
Wreaths were laid on Constable Condon’s grave as a mark of respect to both the wider police force and acknowledgement of the efforts of the local police.
Several speakers told of the potentially grave risk each police officer took when they signed on for duty each day.
Constable Condon was shot in the stomach and thigh by a man who “had gone beserk” with a rifle in June, 1952.
He had been dining with his wife at the Katherine Hotel when called on to help quell the disturbance and was confronted and killed by the armed man.
