During her maiden speech at the opening of the NT Parliament today Ms Nelson said she wanted the $10 million allocated to the CLP’s former project to address more needy problems in Katherine.
Ms Nelson said she did not believe the community could afford a grandiose project like that promised by former NT Chief Minister Adam Giles in May this year.
In May, Mr Giles came to Katherine to support well entrenched CLP MP Willem Westra van Holthe with the $10 million announcement for the Nitmiluk National Park.
Mr Giles said the Skywalk project could become the Territory’s own Grand Canyon.
A 300 metre glass walking platform was to have been built at Pat’s Lookout.
Mr Giles said the Skywalk would attract adventure tourists to the park.
It is not known whether the project was ever put out to tender, or funded in budget documents.
Ms Nelson spent the majority of her speech thanking her many supporters and recognising her incredible journey as a Timorese refugee to being elected to Parliament.
