The alleged thieves stole the till containing a small amount of cash before fleeing the scene.
Police have one of the offenders in custody and detectives are investigating the matter further.
MAN FLEES INTO RIVER
A young man attempted to evade police by fleeing into the Katherine River over the weekend.
Police wanted to talk to the man for allegedly assaulting his partner twice in 24 hours.
Police chased the man on foot before he escaped into the river.
Police sought help from emergency services to launch a water search, however could not locate the man. He was later spotted in town, arrested and put before the court.
DRUG SMORGASBORD
NORTHERN Territory Police have charged a 37-year-old man with drug offences following a traffic arrest in Katherine.
Sen.-Constable Andrew Thomson said the man was pulled over by police on the Stuart Highway just outside the town late last week.
“A conversation with the driver led police to suspect dangerous drugs may have been concealed in the vehicle,” Constable Thomson said.
“Police conducted a search of the vehicle and located 66 grams of methamphetamine, 4.5 kilograms of cannabis concealed in cryovac bags, a quantity of Viagra and a quantity of steroids.”
He said the driver had been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of drugs.
He appeared in Katherine Local Court on Friday and was released on bail.
CANNABIS SEIZURE
Northern Territory Police have charged a 40-year-old man after a significant cannabis seizure.
Detective Sergeant Ian Kennon from the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (NSAID) said the man was caught while travelling through Adelaide River last Tuesday.
“The man had allegedly travelled to Victoria, where he collected the cannabis and returned to the Territory.
“Drug Detection Dog Bear was deployed to search the vehicle, giving positive responses to several locations on the vehicle.”
The total weight of the cannabis was 9.3kg.
He has been charged with possession and supply of a schedule 2 dangerous drug.
He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court last week.
Sergeant Kennon said: “I encourage members of the public to continue to ‘Dob in a Dealer’ so NT Police can target people who profit by supplying drugs to vulnerable members of our community.”
