When Holly Frankcombe knocks on a client’s door the general reaction is one of surprise.
When someone calls an electrician they generally expect a man, not a 21-year-old woman.
Given that trades remain a male dominated industry, it’s of no surprise. But Holly takes that in her stride.
“It is the hardest point; sometimes people can judge you, but it makes me work harder and prove to them that women are able to do the job,” Miss Frankcombe said.
“I really enjoy getting feedback from clients and seeing the surprise on their faces. Hopefully it breaks down barriers for women in the field.”

Holly is the only female electrician on the Power Projects NT staff, but that is something general manager Andrew Harvey is hoping to change.
As the industry moves towards diversity, so too are they.
“Over the last little while we’ve worked to bring some diversity into the company,” Mr Harvey said.
“We’ve got a lot of women employed, but would like to have more in the trades.
“We all know men and women think differently; if we’ve got someone who is able to think about something differently and get the job done better, it’s a great outcome for everyone.
“Holly has been one of our best performers. We’d really love to get some more female electricians and apprentices started.”
If you are thinking of entering the trade as an electrician, Holly said the job is highly rewarding and offers a chance for you to get outside, be physical and challenge yourself.
“Power Projects NT has a great work environment,” Holly said.
“At first I was really nervous moving so far as I didn’t know anyone, or know what it would be like.
“It has honestly been one of the best places I have ever worked; management is so supportive and I feel like I have 20 big brothers.
“If (young female tradies) are interested in moving forward in their careers and bettering themselves, Power Projects is so supportive and offers a lot of training to ensure you are the best you can be.”
