The two pilots will have to fly with stop watch precision to make it in time for the scheduled flypasts which are often a highlight of the day’s ceremonies.
The RAAF has confirmed the Hornets will leave Tindal in the morning for Wagait Beach (near Darwin) to fly over the Cenotaph there at 9.07am.
From the beach they will fly over the Darwin cenotaph at 9.10am and then the short hop (for a supersonic fighter jet) to the War Memorial Park at Palmerston at 9.15am.
From there they will do a Stuart Highway flypast at Adelaide River at 9.25am, and a flypast down Main Terrace in Pine Creek at 9.37am.
Thirty-five minutes flying time down the Stuart Highway from Darwin the Hornets will arrive home at Katherine, even after spending time fulfilling their flypast duties.
The Hornets arrive at Katherine for a flypast at our ceremony at 9.45am and then on to Mataranka at 9.55am (just a ten minute hop) before returning back home to their Tindal base and a nice cup of tea.
Australia is commemorating the Centenary of ANZAC – 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War.
Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying. Information on aircraft noise and current flying activities is available at www.defence.gov.au/aircraftnoise or by calling 1300 DEFENCE (1300 333 362).
