The positioning of the Cenotaph in O’Shea Park has long been debated because of a lack of space and the creation of a Stuart/Victoria Highway traffic bottleneck.
The cenotaph, on the corner of Stuart Highway and O`Shea Terrace and adjacent to the Katherine River bridge, was officially opened at its current location on Anzac Day in 1989.
The RSL sub-branch would liked to see it moved to a new location in Railway Terrace.
Katherine MLA Sandra Nelson today said after many years of submitting applications, the Katherine RSL last year received a grant of $181,689 from the NT Government to relocate the cenotaph.
“This grant will provide the RSL with funds to relocate and upgrade the cenotaph at a new location, one that will be representative of the legacy and the honour that our service men and women so rightly deserve,” she said.
”Today, as our service men and women continue to serve with dedication and distinction both at home and abroad, we remember and honour those who have gone before,” Ms Nelson said.
A surprising number of young children helped Katherine mark Anzac Day with a dawn service at the Cenotaph this morning.
Thousands more came out later for a well supported march and Centotaph service.
Wreaths were laid and the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand were played at both services to honour those who have served both countries.
The march and services were again well supported by the Tindal RAAF Base, with two F/A 18 A/B Hornets making a flypast down Katherine’s main street.
