The pair of F/A 18A/B Hornets which thrilled the Anzac Day crowds here in Katherine on Tuesday were actually breaking the law.

The RAAF has confirmed the Hornets were likely travelling at 650kmh when they streaked along Katherine Terrace, which has a 50kmh speed restriction in the CBD.

As our tongue-in-cheek resident calculated, at the going rate of about $150 for every 15kmh above speed limits under NT traffic laws, the fly boys are each up for more than $6000 in fines.

“This doesn’t even touch the licence demerit points they have lost, about 39 demerit points, Mr Toomuch Timeonhishands (our alias) said.

“If they were on their mobile phones while driving, well we couldn’t see, then they’d be up for a lot more.”

Mr Timeonhishands said if they were learner or probationary licence holders, again it was hard to see the plates, then it would even worse.

“Of course they did flypasts over about six towns on Anzac Day so I suppose all the fines should really multiply by six.”

We did advise Mr Timeonhishands to keep his identity secret, not just because of ridicule, but because the RAAF pilots have access to weapons.
