Unpaid dog and cat fines are much worse, reaching almost $21,000 in the past year.
Alderman Toni Tapp-Coutts has asked for an investigation into the community’s failure to pay fines.
Also, Katherine Town Council has been directed to look into a missing disabled car parking space at the town’s post office.
Mayor Fay Miller said the disabled parking bay was necessary for post office customers.
It is believed the parking bay was removed and replaced with another at the rear of the post office but new security arrangements means that can no longer be accessed.
Council staff were directed to examine where the disabled space can be redrawn in Giles Street.
Council was told this week the outstanding amount of unpaid fines have jumped.
Unpaid “animal” fines totalled $4459 in the past three months, $20,621 for the past year for a total of $25,979 outstanding.
Parking fines still to be paid have totalled $1927 for the past three months, $9695 for the past year and $11,622 in total to be collected.
Council was told the failure of visitors from other states to pay their fines may be part of the problem.
